Through the cloud’s no-code development platform, Google aims to eliminate the hassle of learning or finding someone to code, develop and fix an app.

Google has launched AppSheet to its Google Workspace interface, a feature that lets users create an app without having to write any code.

Through the cloud’s no-code development platform, Google aims to eliminate the hassle of learning or finding someone to code, develop and fix an app.

Users can create their own applications using AppSheet directly from Google Sheets. Simply open Sheet and look for ‘Open in AppSheet’ option under Tools.

Create an AppSheet account, start making an app and the AppSheet will manage the other parts -coding, analysing the data structure and creating a prototype app from it.

The data in the Sheet will serve as the source of data for the new application. AppSheet will automatically detect types of data connected, and will create an interface that is easy to use.

After a prototype is created, users can make modifications to their app with the options provided. It will then provide an option of installing the app on mobile and any future updates made to the app will be instantly reflected.

In addition to this, they can add dashboards to show real-time data, barcodes to scan items, and email workflows to receive automatic notifications.

AppSheet enables users to build all kinds of apps ranging from an app that manages customer orders to a safety app.

“There are plenty of possibilities to explore, especially since AppSheet integrates with other handy tools like Google Calendar, Maps and more,” Google said in a blog post.

Facebook tweaked News Feed to show more mainstream news: Report

Facebook allegedly made a change in its News Feed algorithm immediately after the US presidential election, to favour top news publishers so that trustworthy and quality content can be pushed ahead on its platform, The New York Times reported.

The social network reportedly tweaked how much weight the News Feed gives to its internal "news ecosystem quality" metric.

The change was part of the "break glass plans" Facebook had developed for the aftermath of a contested election where Donald Trump kept calling the results stolen and rigged.

"It resulted in a spike in visibility for big, mainstream publishers like CNN, The New York Times and NPR, while posts from highly engaged hyperpartisan pages, such as Breitbart and Occupy Democrats, became less visible," the report said on Tuesday, citing sources.

The "news ecosystem quality" score (NEQ) is an internal ranking Facebook assigns to news publishers based on signals about the quality of their journalism.

"Several days after the election, Mr. (Mark) Zuckerberg agreed to increase the weight that Facebook's algorithm gave to NEQ scores to make sure authoritative news appeared more prominently".

According to a Facebook spokesperson, there are many variables at play in every product decision it makes.

"The assertions in this report are based on sources who have no product decision-making authority and are advancing their own narrow impression of how our process works," the spokesperson told The Verge in a statement.

According to the NYT report, some Facebook employees now want this News Feed change to become permanent to allow more quality content on the platform.

Fee on money transfers for US, doesn't apply to India: Google Pay

Google on Wednesday clarified that users in India will not have to pay any fee for money transfers on its payment platform, and that the charges are for users in the US.

Last week, Google had announced that it is launching a redesigned Google Pay app next year on Android and iOS, starting with the US, and that users will not be able to use the service on a web browser.

Reports had said that Google Pay will also add a fee on instant money transfers.

"These charges and fees are specific to the US and do it apply to the Google Pay or Google Pay for Business apps in India," a Google spokesperson said.

Google Pay had 67 million users in India with a total payment value of $110 billion on an annualised basis, as of September 2019.

Google Pay for Business had announced over 3 million merchants in June 2020. It supports UPI and tokenised debit and credit cards as forms of payment in India.

Google Pay competes with players like Paytm, Walmart-owned PhonePe and Amazon Pay in India.

GravityRAT strikes back: infamous spyware cunningly becomes multiplatform

Kaspersky has identified a previously unknown piece of Android spyware. This malicious module was inserted into a travel application for Indian users. A closer look revealed that it was related to GravityRAT, a spying Remote Access Trojan (RAT) known for carrying out activities in India. Further investigation confirmed that the group behind the malware invested effort into making a multiplatform tool. In addition to targeting Windows operating systems, it can now be used on Android and Mac OS. The campaign is still active.

In 2018, an overview into the developments of GravityRAT was published by cybersecurity researchers. The tool was used in targeted attacks against Indian military services. According to Kaspersky’s data, the campaign has been active since at least 2015, being mainly focused on Windows operating systems. A couple of years ago, however, the situation changed, and the group added Android to the target list.

The identified module was yet further proof of this change, and there were a number of reasons why it didn’t look like a typical piece of Android spyware. For instance, a specific application has to be selected to carry out malicious purposes, and the malicious code - as is often the case - was not based on the code of previously known spyware applications. This motivated Kaspersky researchers to compare the module with already known APT families.

Analysis of the command and control (C&C) addresses used, revealed several additional malicious modules, also related to the actor behind GravityRAT. Overall, more than 10 versions of GravityRAT were found, being distributed under the guise of legitimate applications, such as secure file sharing applications that would help protect users’ devices from encrypting Trojans, or media players. Used together, these modules enabled the group to tap into Windows OS, Mac OS, and Android.

The list of enabled functions in most cases was quite standard and typically expected for spyware. The modules can retrieve device data, contact lists, email addresses, call logs, and SMS messages. Some of the Trojans were also searching for files with .jpg, .jpeg, .log, .png, .txt, .pdf, .xml, .doc, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx, .docx, and .opus extensions in a device's memory to also send them to the C&C.

“Our investigation indicated that the actor behind GravityRAT is continuing to invest in its spying capacities. Cunning disguise and an expanded OS portfolio not only allow us to say that we can expect more incidents with this malware in the APAC region, but this also supports the wider trend that malicious users are not necessarily focused on developing new malware, but developing proven ones instead in an attempt to be as successful as possible,” comments Tatyana Shishkova, security expert at Kaspersky.

To stay safe from spyware threats, Kaspersky recommends taking the following security measures:

  • Provide your SOC team with access to the latest threat intelligence (TI). The Kaspersky Threat Intelligence Portal grants access to the company’s TI, providing cyberattack data and insights gathered by Kaspersky for more than 20 years.
  • For endpoint level detection, investigation and timely remediation of incidents, implement reliable EDR solutions, such as Kaspersky Endpoint Detection and Response.
  • To protect corporate devices, including those on Android, from malicious applications, use an endpoint security solution with a mobile application control. This can make sure that only trusted applications from an approved whitelist can be installed on devices that have access to sensitive corporate data.

Create a One Stop Shop for Your Personal Brand with ItsMYUrls

30% of Facebook users are from the United States. 8% of Americans are on Twitter. Lets not forget all the niche social networking sites, including those for DJs, food bloggers, movie lovers and so on. Across all social media channels, Americans are the second most active.

Think for a moment about how many social networks you belong to. Two? Five? Ten? How do you manage the URLs of them all? Now look at your business card. Does it have at least two links to your social profiles? What if there was a solution to manage all your networks and their URLs in one place, leaving you just one simple URL to remember and share with others?

Thankfully, Eddie Inserra of ItsMYUrls.com had the vision of solving this problem after seeing many colleagues struggling with managing all their accounts. Boston-based ItsMYUrls is a website where you connect all your social networks under one platform and generate one unique URL to use across all social sites. When clicked, this URL will bring you to the suite of social networks to which you belong, allowing anyone to connect with you anywhere on the web in one place.

Inserra first realized there was a market opportunity for a business like this when he was out in L.A. while doing marketing for a small record label. “A few people gave me their business cards and one had seven to ten links to his social media profiles. I looked at it and thought, ‘it’s so overwhelming, I don’t want to go to all these links. There’s got to be a better way.' Then a light bulb popped in my head,” explained Inserra.

The concept is simple. One link, one click and one QR code scan which can connect you with someone’s complete online profile.

The idea to implement a QR code to compliment the single ItsMYUrls URL was the brainchild of Inserra during a Mashable event in New York City a few years back. Inserra was connecting with so many people, all of which had a presence on multiple social networks. He brainstormed the idea of allowing each person who became a member of ItsMYUrls to have a QR code, which would be easily scannable, to connect people instantaneously online. The QR code has proven to be very useful for those including DJs and musicians.

As you probably know, social networking sites come and go almost every day. Naturally, I had to ask Inserra how he planned for his company to grow with the evolving social atmosphere.

“Everyone talks about the major social sites. A majority of people also have links to smaller niche sites. There’s a niche for everybody. We built this to create, on the most basic level, a go-to site to site online. It’s based on the simplest way to connect from one site to another.

ItsMYUrls can easily grow and scale with the dynamic social web. For example, almost immediately after Apple launched their social network, Ping, people updated their  profiles with their new Ping URLs.

How is this possible?

ItsMYUrls doesn’t work with any site’s API. It takes no engineering effort on the company’s end to begin supporting a new social site. “With so many sites being created and dying every day, ItsMYUrls can grow quickly and easily with the social networking world,” Inserra explained. Users can adapt to the changes by simply removing their old links from their profile.

You may or may not have heard about this company, but regardless, they’re doing some pretty innovative things when it comes to marketing. According to Inserra, they’ve done everything from guerilla marketing, PPC advertising, implementing viral share buttons, and word of mouth.

An intriguing marketing campaign they did was an instance where another co-founder wore an iPad which was playing a demo video of their company around his neck at an event . This made people think: “Is he really wearing his iPad as a necklace?” Then people came up to him and began a conversation.

They’ve also had the luxury of having many celebrities use their site. Inserra and his team have worked to build relationships with people around Hollywood – from A-list actors to directors and DJs.

It seems that Inserra and his team really have a compelling idea here. “We’re happy it’s going well and hopefully we will be expanding with more social networks and the social media space. It’s a simple concept - we don’t want it to be flashy, we don’t want any distractions like other similar sites have. “
